How Do Garage Door Safety Sensors Work?
Safety sensors are an important feature of all residential automatic garage doors. In fact, federal law requires them on all garage door openers that are manufactured after 1993. For added safety, any automatic garage door opener that doesn’t have a safety reverse mechanism properly connected and installed in it won’t even travel in the down position.

How Do I know If My Garage Door Sensor Isn’t Working?

Can Garage Door Sensors Be Repaired?
When dirt is coating the sensor eye, usually all you need is a soft, clean cloth. Misalignments may be corrected by bending the sensors back into position or tightening the screws of the bracket holding the unit in place. If there seems to be no easy fix, a garage door professional can troubleshoot the problem and determine the best course of action to fix it.
If you decide to try to fix the sensor on your own, make sure the area is shaded and disconnect the power to the sensors. Call a technician if you suspect a wiring problem.
